Job Overview

Working under the general direction of the Senior Mentor/FASD Educator, the Mentor is responsible for providing a broad range of promotion, outreach, intervention and treatment services and supports, that focus on intervention and health preservation for both high-risk women and women with difficult life circumstances, including their families, in the areas of substance abuse / misuse and fetal alcohol awareness and prevention in order to promote the adoption of healthier lifestyles and living.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides counseling and support to program participant(s) with emphasis on establishing individual goals, objectives and monitoring points within the program. Engages in an ongoing process of monitoring progress, providing constructive feedback and necessary interventions which utilizes an appropriate combination of traditional methods and values partnered with access to contemporary physical, emotional and psychological services.
  • Coordinates home visitation and community support activities designed to maintain a level of contact and service delivery matching the identified needs of the constituent(s) and, where required and appropriate, provides a broad range of crisis support and intervention activities.
  • Maintains an awareness of agencies, programs and supports providing community and culturally based health, wellness and lifestyle supports relative to the FAS/E Program, and ensures an effective integration and delivery of services to constituent(s).
  • Facilitates, and provides support to, individual and group activities such as personal counseling sessions, Sharing Circles, Sweats and Retreats which are designed to provide a base of personal knowledge and reference to constituents through individual and shared interactions and discussions.
  • Maintains a thorough and accurate record of all constituent contacts, personal visits and appointments, agency referrals and document progress towards achieving the goal(s) and objective(s) established collaboratively with each Constituent.
  • Acts as an advocate with other agencies, organizations and individuals for the purpose of addressing immediate needs, while constantly encouraging and supporting personal empowerment, independence and self-reliance, for current constituents.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Social Work, Social Sciences, or a combination of experience & education deemed equivalent by the Centre.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in dealing with the prenatal substance abuse / misuse issues utilizing a multi-discipline intervention and treatment approach.
  • Previous practical experience in working within an Aboriginal-based community services providing physical, emotional, spiritual and social support to individuals and families.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Possess a valid Driver’s License and a vehicle for work-tasks during the day.
  • Computer skills; Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively with constituents.
  • Maintaining accurate case records.
  • Ability to communicate in an Indigenous language(s) would be a definite asset.
  • Ability to function effectively in a team.
