Position Overview

The Tribal Dental Hygienist will have a strong and proven ability to coordinate and provide services as encompassed in the Children's Oral Health Initiative (COHI) requirements, including oral health education and public health promotion programming in the SERDC First Nation Communities as well as non-affiliated First Nation Communities in the respective region.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, coordinate and maintain dental oral health preventive programs in SERDC First Nations communities.
  • Ensure Aboriginal Head Start, daycare and school-based tooth brushing programs are monitored and maintained.
  • Maintain inventory of oral health promotion and consumable supplies.
  • Ensure the collection of appropriately completed permission forms.
  • Conduct COHI dental screenings.
  • Apply (or ensure the application of) fluoride varnish according to COHI protocol standards.
  • Placement of sealants and placement of IST/ART (if applicable to the scope of practice).
  • Collect, complete and submit data in a timely fashion (i.e. Dental Screening Forms and Dental Services Daily Records, etc.).
  • Maintain appropriate records (i.e. COHI lists, Referral Lists, Dental Charts, etc.).
  • Train and provide direction to the COHI Dental Worker.
  • Ensure proper protocols are followed (i.e. Infection Control Protocol).
  • Identify and document oral health conditions (for example: abnormal oral or pathological conditions).
  • Refer clients to an appropriate specialist for dental treatment (if required).
  • Train parent(s)/caregiver(s) in basic oral hygiene methods for themselves and children in their care, including the knee-to-knee technique.
  • Preparing reports for funders and liaising with referring sources, ensuring reports are completed as requested and required.
  • All other related duties assigned by your supervisor and the Leadership of SERDC.

Requirements

  • Must be a Registered Dental Hygienist (ROH), College of Dental Hygienists of Manitoba.
  • Knowledge of First Nation cultural practices, traditions, and customers would be an asset.
  • Understanding, sensitivity, and cultural awareness of the social and cultural history of Indigenous peoples.
  • Proven flexibility and patience towards scheduling and effective interaction with diverse groups, co-workers, management, client groups, stakeholders, and leadership.
  • Experience working in a First Nation Community would be an asset.
  • Must have excellent oral and written skills.
  • Must be computer literate and have experience working with computer programs such as Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, Access, Database, and Microsoft PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge of Federal/Provincial Healthcare Systems.

Working conditions

  • Must have access to a reliable insured vehicle and valid Manitoba Driver’s License.
  • Work a standard work week of 40hrs.
  • Additional hours beyond the standard regular hours of work may be required.

Physical requirements

  • Overall, Strength Demands: Medium strength demands include exerting 20-50 pounds occasionally, 10-25 pounds at times, and or up to 10 pounds some of the time.
  • Repetitive desk tasks in an at times fast paced/busy environment.
  • Computer Equipment and Software: Computer, fax/copier machine, calculator, telephone, and scanner.
