Position Summary

Under the direction of the Senior Manager, the IRS Community Worker will deliver culturally sensitive, trauma-informed support to First Nation survivors of Indian Residential Schools and their families. This role includes closely supporting individuals impacted by intergenerational trauma from residential school experiences, aiding in healing, and fostering community wellness. IRS Community Workers create a safe, supportive environment for clients, honoring Indigenous cultural practices, traditions, and values.

This position is crucial in supporting healing and resilience within First Nation communities, focusing on culturally appropriate methods that honor the unique experiences of IRS survivors and their families.

Key Responsibilities

 Client Support

  • Develop and implement counselling and intervention programs to assist clients in determining goals and means of attaining them.
  • Provide counseling, therapeutic support, and mediation services to clients, along with facilitating group sessions.
  • Collaborate with community agencies and partners, identify additional or alternative services, and coordinate client referrals.
  • Uphold confidentiality and handle client information with utmost sensitivity and respect.

Trauma-Informed Care

  • Utilize trauma-informed approaches to address the unique needs of IRS survivors and their families.
  • Conduct assessments and provide crisis intervention when necessary.
  • Monitor client progress and conduct follow-ups to ensure continuous support.

Documentation and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date case notes, reports, and client files.
  • Document all services provided while adhering to organizational policies.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of counseling programs and interventions, monitor client progress in addressing identified challenges, and track advancement toward established goals.
  • Prepare assessment, progress and follow up and court documents.
  • Collaborate with team members to ensure coordinated care and continuous improvement of services.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Diploma or degree in Social Work, Indigenous Studies, Child and Youth, Psychology, or a related field or Bachelor’s or master’s degree in a therapy-related field.
  • Five years’ experience in the counselling field or providing emotional and culturally appropriate support to First Nation people.
  • Experience working with First Nation communities and knowledge of the impacts of Indian Residential Schools is essential.
  • Strong understanding of First Nation history, culture, and traditions.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed care, crisis intervention, and mental health resources.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Proven expertise in organization and facilitation skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft office word, excel and outlook.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to work in a variety of settings, including office, community, and clients home environments.
  • Willingness to travel within Manitoba as needed.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends.
  • Must have a valid Class 5 driver’s license and a reliable vehicle.
  • Must have a current satisfactory Criminal Record Check and vulnerable sector search and Clear Child Abuse Checks.
