Position Summary:

The Counsellor provides services in accordance with the Mission and Values of St.Amant, policies and procedures of the assigned Program(s), external legislation and regulatory bodies and all relevant professional standards of practice. The Counsellor is familiar with and promotes a “customer service focus” in the provision of services to clients, staff and in other professional relationships.

As an active team member in the Program(s) assigned, the Counsellor participates in continuous quality improvement activities, including the development, modification and implementation of service and program goals, objectives, policies, procedures and standards. The Counsellor uses service evaluation feedback to purposefully and continually strengthen services. The Counsellor actively supports all initiatives designed to strengthen services and program integrity.

Qualifications:

  • Masters obtained in counselling, social work, psychology, occupational therapy or related discipline from a recognized university.
  • Current registration in good standing with an appropriate licensing body required.
  • Previous counselling experience, including individual work with children and adults.
  • Extensive knowledge and the application of practice of individual and program family/group dynamics.
  • An understanding of First Nations peoples and multicultural group issues, customs, cultures, trauma, colonization and cultural oppression would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of community resources and how to make use of them.
  • Knowledge of CCPA Code of Ethics (Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association).
  • Ability to identify high risk situations and respond appropriately.
  • Ability to work effectively with clients, caregivers and families, to supervise and teach others and to work harmoniously with others.
  • Must be knowledgeable of the literature in the area of developmental disabilities, of the history of support and treatment to individuals diagnosed with a developmental disability and of current trends, philosophies and practices concerning their care, education, work and lifestyles.
  • Experience working within Indigenous communities / cultures is an asset.
  • Knowledge of an Indigenous culture and language would be an asset.
  • Ability to travel including to remote communities in Manitoba where travel by small plane and/or boat may be required in addition to overnight stays in or around a respective community. Ability to work flexible hours as necessary.
  • Possess a valid Manitoba driver’s license and a reliable vehicle is a necessity for community based programs.
  • Bilingualism in French and English is an asset.
