Job Summary
Under the direction of the Director of the Preschool Centre, the Assistant Director is responsible for assisting the Director in the day-to-day delivery and management of the Daycare Program providing a safe, developmentally and culturally appropriate environment for children. The successful incumbent will have the skills and experience to play a supporting role in programming that focuses on child development, staff development and setting up strong administrative processes.
Responsibilities and Tasks
- Assist the Director to develop and implement a program for Preschool children:
- Plan and implement activities to meet the physical, emotional, intellectual and social needs of the children in the program
- Ensure the provision of nutritious snacks and lunches
- Provide adequate equipment and activities
- Ensure equipment and the facility are clean, well maintained and safe at all times
- Provide weekly and monthly schedules of activities
- Develop culturally appropriate programs and activities
- Assist the Director to supervise and develop daycare staff:
- Supervise, coach and encourage staff
- Provide input on staff performance/evaluations
- Take corrective action when necessary
- Assess training needs
- Provide assistance in the administration of the daycare program:
- Keep parents informed of program expectations, program activities and their child’s progress
- Maintain current, accurate and confidential children’s files
- Receive and record daycare fees
- Enrollment of Families
- Work with outside organizations to support families
- Perform other related duties as required including working with the children
Education and Experience
- ECE III Classification or ECE II in training
- Current Investigation Authorization including Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Persons Search; and Child Abuse Registry Check
- Knowledge and previous experience a definite asset
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledgeable in child development theories and practices
- Competent in Emergent Curriculum and Invitations to Play
- Ability to provide safe and appropriate activities for children to enhance play and learning
- Familiarity with relevant legislation, policies and procedures to ensure that children are supervised and safe at all times
- Knowledgeable in Human resources management
- Skilled in child program development, implement and evaluation
- Demonstrated understanding of Learning through Play, Planning from Play Documentation
- Experience with emergency procedures
