The Opportunity:

Velma’s House is an Indigenous led, low-barrier safe space for women and gender diverse folks who are unsheltered, experiencing sexual exploitation or gender based violence. Under the direction of the Program Coordinator, Part Time Support Workers are responsible for the day-to-day interactions with relatives that are accessing the safe space and variety of resource offered. Our safe space serves a place of comfort, connection, and safety, with an emphasis on meeting the immediate safety needs of those who need it most, when they need it most.

What You Will Be Doing…

  • Walking alongside relatives that are accessing Velma’s House with respect, care, and understanding that each participant’s needs will be diverse and unique
  • Fostering clear, kind, and professional participant relationships
  • Responsible for tracking and maintaining accurate and detailed statistics
  • Planning and implementing relevant workshops and programming
  • Assisting in community-centered systems navigations and resources
  • Demonstrating knowledge on strict consent and confidentially policies and procedures
  • Executing organizational safety protocols, incident reports, and donation procedures
  • Facilitating health supports including access to in-house physicians and nurses, Elders and Knowledge keepers, ceremony, traditional medicines and cultural teachings
  • Providing participant’s services such as shower and washroom facilities, nutritious meals, laundry, hygiene and wellness supplies, harm reduction, and emergency clothing

Who You Are:

  • Strong understanding of issues related to mental health, gender based violence, problematic substance use; sexual exploitation
  • Comprehensive and current knowledge of resources and systems within Winnipeg
  • Commitment to cultural reclamation practices and Ways of Being, Two-Eyed Seeing
  • Able to communicate effectively, both verbally and written
  • Strong understanding and proponent of harm reduction principles and trauma informed care
  • Understanding on systems of oppression, able to apply anti-oppression measure
  • Strong commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion; including issues impacting the 2SLGBTQ+ community
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams)
  • Highly proficient in interpersonal and emotional intelligence skills
  • Team player who is able to work safely and collaboratively in fast-paced and high-needs environments

You Have…

  • 1-3 years of related formal training (mental health, social work, family studies, gender-based violence, substance training, community health, etc.), work experience, and combined lived experience are all valued
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Satisfactory completion of recent (as of the last 6 months) Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search; Child Abuse Registry Check; Adult Abuse Registry check
  • Current Emergency First Aid Certificate and CPR
  • Non Violent Crisis Intervention or related Crisis Management Training
  • Opioid Reversal Training
  • Mental Health First Aid and ASIST training is an asset
  • Valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s License and access to a vehicle are considered assets
