OVERVIEW: The Caregiver provides a direct role in providing nurturing care for children and young people from 0 - 18 years of age through customary, kinship or alternative care arrangements. You are supported by a multi-disciplinary team of helpers who will assist you in delivering the highest standard of care.

 CAREGIVER RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide the day-to-day primary responsibilities of caring for children in a nurturing and wholistic manner, ensuring that medical, physical, emotional, cultural and educational needs are supported.
  • Offer a supportive and understanding environment for children who have had complex and adverse experiences.
  • Support children in accessing services and implementing strategies focused on their healing and wellness, including those services available through Shawenim Abinoojii and partner First Nations organizations.
  • Provide care with compassion, patience, and empathy, understanding the unique needs and experiences of each child.
  • Serve as a positive role model and advocate for the well-being of the children in your care.
  • Maintain a safe and welcoming home environment, provide appropriate clothing, and adhere to Regulations and e Guidelines set out by our First Nations communities and governing bodies.
  • Participate in the assessment and case planning for the short and long-term care plans for the child.
  • Complete and submit required service documentation, including daily logs and incident reports.
  • Advocate for and nurture family and community connection by building and supporting healthy and collaborative relationships with family and community.
  • Maintain strong communication with your team to provide a healthy environment that yields positive results for the children, young people and their families.
  • Attend all requisite training provided by or offered through Shawenim Abinoojii Inc.

WHAT YOU BRING AS A CAREGIVER:

  • Demonstrate experience in raising children and supporting their wellbeing and success.
  • Knowledge and/or understanding of First Nations experiences, culture and traditional philosophies.
  • Knowledge of Anishinaabe family systems.
  • Compassionate, patient and empathetic to the needs of children and families.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to speak Anishinaabe is preferred and considered an asset.
  • Understanding of various social, psychological, and physical health needs.
  • Ability to transport children safely to and from appointments, visits and other destinations as required.
  • Must have a satisfactory Criminal Record (Vulnerable Sector Check), Child Abuse Registry Check and Prior Contact check are mandatory.
