An organization that fosters hope and opportunities to empower children, youth and families throughout Manitoba requires an experienced Youth Care Practitioner (YCP) for a Government funded Summer Student position. This position runs for a total of 9 weeks, or 360 hours of work. YCPs are responsible to provide shelter, crisis intervention, client case decisions and planning as well as basic needs service provision to at-risk youth, in an emergency shelter setting, from a Strength-based clinical philosophy.  YCPs also work together with other teams in the best interest of client’s and the overall mission and purpose of the program.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: of the YCP include, but are not limited to:

Program Related:

  • Assesses client cases and problem solves
  • Makes good client case decisions based on the program’s purposes statement
  • Performs shelter intakes, assessments and registration duties
  • Provides counselling and crisis intervention
  • Performs various administrative duties related to client care
  • Supervises, provides service and basic needs care to clients
  • Performs general facility tasks, chores and routines
  • Attends staff meeting and training as required
  • Works in collaboration with other teams
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Previous education and/or experience in an applicable Human Services field
  • Current (within 3 months) Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search, or willingness to obtain
  • Current (within 3 months) Child Abuse Registry Check, or willingness to obtain
  • Current Emergency First Aid and CPR Level C
  • Willingness to obtain training as per agency policy


  • ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training)
  • Crisis counseling training/experience
  • Knowledge of Aboriginal culture and language
  • Knowledge of Strength-based theory and practical application
  • Experience in a leadership role
  • Knowledge of Aboriginal culture and language would be an asset

This position is a Summer Student position that is dependent upon funding. In order to apply for this position you must meet all of the following criteria:

  1. Is 30 years of age or younger at the time of job placement
  2. Was registered as a fulltime student during the preceding academic year
  3. Intends to return to school on a fulltime basis during the next academic year
  4. Is a student in a post-secondary, CEGEP, vocational or technical program
  5. Is a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, and,
  6. Is legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial legislation and regulations
