JOB SUMMARY

CAHRD’s Learning Garden weaves traditional Indigenous gardening practices into a wide variety of activities while focusing on teaching Indigenous students the history of traditional Indigenous crops and sacred medicines. The Learning Garden is recognized for its programming in education, food security, healthy living and gardening.

The Program Assistant will assist with maintaining the Learning Gardens; teaching and guiding students in all aspects of gardening; and teaching and guiding children from both on-site Kookum’s Place Daycare Centres to learn about, harvest and prepare vegetables for healthy and nutritious snacks.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS

  • Assist in maintaining the Learning Gardens including weeding and watering the plants/grounds.
  • Assist with guiding and teaching students as appropriate in all aspects of the gardens including braiding sweet grass.
  • Assist with hands-on projects such as designing and building indoor gardening systems including Deep Water Culture tables, Nutrient Filament Technique systems.
  • Maintenance of aquaponics systems.
  • Prepare healthy dishes utilizing produce and micro-greens.
  • Harvest produce and assist with preparing healthy snacks for both students and children.
  • Assist with preparing and presenting workshops on how to harvest produce and the significance of the sacred medicines.
  • Assist with developing and conducting fun and age appropriate fitness activities.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

  • A knowledge or strong interest in gardening and horticulture.
  • A student studying in Landscaping, Education, Science, Botany or Environmental Studies would be an asset.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Effective verbal and listening communications skills when working with students.
  • Knowledge of gardening.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous Sacred Medicines a definite asset.
