 JOB SUMMARY

The Student Support Liaison (SSL) is involved with the assessment and support of students’ education, emotional, social and behavioural needs. Responsible to provide supports to students to ensure they can meet their education goals. Follow -up involves working with students, referrals to other support agencies, and other professional staff.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct telephone calls, home visits, and work with community agencies in order to assess situation and recommend or implement appropriate intervention strategies to ensure the student returns to school.
  • Crisis intervention support and referral and regular student follow up.
  • Personal, career and education support and advice to students including program planning and funding.
  • Develop and conduct student workshops.
  • Educational assessment of students including academic testing.
  • Attend Employment Assistance Appeals for individual learners when required.
  • Assist students to maintain a healthy and productive lifestyle by providing information, referral and advocacy on student loans, bursaries, banding funding and other sources of funding, family and single accommodations, health promotion and referrals to appropriate social service, health and wellness, and child welfare agencies.
  • Participate and assist with school and student activities.
  • Maintain and update student files and database.
  • Provide up-to-date Student bursaries and scholarship information.
  • Maintain written records and report regularly to the Director.
  • Provide information and conduct orientation sessions for the Aboriginal Community Campus (ACC) including programs, admission requirements, application procedures, transfer credit information etc. and general course and program planning information.
  • Maintain and uphold confidentiality as outlined in policy.
  • Adhere to the policies and procedures of CAHRD.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelors of Social Work Degree preferred or an equivalent combination of a Post-Secondary Degree and experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Counselling experience in an adult setting (education and/or employment).
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary team environment with respect, professionalism, co-operation, sensitivity and cultural awareness.
  • Knowledge of community resources.
  • Demonstrate strong time management, communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to apply effective problem solving and alternative dispute resolution strategies.
  • Experience and understanding of the Indigenous community is essential.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, data base systems and Internet use.
  • A valid driver’s license and access to vehicle.
